Greek Isles Cruise
This exciting cruise is on Royal Caribbean’s “JEWEL OF THE SEAS” that departs Rome, Italy and sails to the Greek Islands of Santorini and Mykonos, with stops in Athens and Katakolon that’s filled with outdoor cafes. The ship is like a floating hotel with a variety of restaurants. Best of all, no food to buy for the entire cruise as breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily. There is a shopping galleria, mini golf course, rock climbing wall, and two swimming pools plus a large outdoor movie screen to watch movies under the stars. The highest point of the ship is the Viking Lounge with amazing 360° panoramic views.
July 29 Everyone will fly overnight from their hometown to Rome, Italy. Enjoy dinner, a movie and some rest as you cross the Atlantic Ocean.
July 30 Upon arrival in Rome, you will be transferred to the cruise ship in Civitavecchia that departs at 5:00 PM. Tonight, there will be a “Welcome Dinner” with separate dining room tables reserved just for our group of Jehovah’s Witnesses so you can meet Friends from various parts of the country.
July 31 Enjoy a fun “Day at Sea” to enjoy the warm weather around the swimming pool and the sun decks. You will have plenty of time to browse through the ship’s shops and dine at a restaurant of your choice followed by a Broadway musical performance in the ship’s showroom.
Aug. 1 Be sure to be on deck as you approach the most unusual island of SANTORINI. It is hard to describe the sensation you will get when you first see this breathtaking island situated on a high cliff that sits on the rim of a volcano that erupted in 1600 B.C. The town with its narrow walking streets can be reached only by cable car or on an exciting donkey ride that you will not forget as this is one of the most photographed islands in the world. (See Awake 9/8/00 p. 16)
Aug. 2 Arrive at the picturesque island of MYKONOS known for its unique narrow alleyways, white washed houses, and often called the “Venice of Greece.” Enjoy its sandy beaches and crystal clear waters visited by artists and celebrities from around the world.
Aug. 3 Early this morning your ship will arrive in PIRAEUS, the port for Athens, Greece. Here you can tour the Areopagus (Mars Hill), scene of Paul’s dramatic experience where he delivered his most famous discourse of “The Unknown God.” See the ancient Parthenon high atop the Acropolis and then wander through the Central Market, where you’ll see stands of meat, fish, vegetables and fruits in one of the oldest and most colorful markets in Greece! (WT 7/15/98, p.25 and Awake 3/8/00, p.13) You can also visit the bazaar for bargains on jewelry, leather goods and Greek souvenirs.
Aug. 4 Today you will arrive in the port village of KATAKOLON, where the ancient Greeks came to watch the Olympic Games that started in 776 B.C. This quaint little seaside town on the Ionian Sea is a gateway to ancient Olympia. You can stand at the starting line where the games were once held and imagine the voices of thousands of spectators sitting on the stone bleachers that are now over 2000 years old. Be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum and then walk through the narrow streets to explore the marketplace and its many outdoor cafes along the seaside. Try some of the famous fried calamari in a Greek taverna along with a glass of Ouzo at a waterfront café.
